Transfusion Medicine and Hemostasis: Clinical and Laboratory AspectsBy Christopher D. Hillyer
Publisher: Academic Press
Number Of Pages: 762
Publication Date: 2009-03-30
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0123744326
ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780123744326
Product Description: This new handbook in transfusion medicine and hemostasis aims to combine clinical and laboratory information from two fields which have high degrees of overlap into one concise, easy-to-use pocket book. This comprehensive reference guide will have the depth of information to be helpful to all physicians who order and administer blood components and specialized factors for hemostatic abnormalities, as well as those who consult and care for these often very ill patients. The breadth of the book will be ideal for pathology, transfusion medicine, hematology, and anesthesiology residents and fellows, as well as certified and specialized practitioners in these fields. The editors have chosen to employ a standardized format throughout the book which allows each chapter to be focused on a well-defined subject consisting of less than 6 pages. Information should be easy to read, precise, and concise. Though extensive reference lists are valuable in larger texts, they are not necessary in a pocket-size handbook intended for quick reference. The editors have chosen to include key, recent publications as "Further Readings", most often from the past 2 years. A general reference list to larger textbooks and standards in the fields will be included at the end along with a list of common abbreviations and indexes that cross reference diagnostic, clinical and therapeutic commonalities.

What is homeopathy?
WHAT IS HOMEOPATHY?IS HOMEOPATHY A NEW THERAPY?HOW DOES HOMEOPATHY WORK?IS HOMEOPATHY SAFE?WHAT ARE HOMEOPATHIC MEDICINES LIKE?HOW IS A HOMEOPATHIC REMEDY SELECTED?HOW DO I TAKE HOMEOPATHIC MEDICINES?
What Is Homeopathy?Homeopathy is a natural system of medicine which gives relief from suffering for millions of people in nearly every country in the world. It is a therapy based on the practice of treating like with like. HOMEOPATHY is derived from the Greek word HOMOIOS, meaning like or similar. Homeopathy is concerned with the treatment of the whole person, as an individual, rather than treating the disease alone. For this reason, people with the same disease may often be treated with different medicines.????: Study Temple-All kinds of Study Material What is homeopathy?Homeopathy is also used effectively in dental treatment, the treatment of animals and in conjunction with other therapies, such as acupuncture and chiropractic.Homeopathy has a significant role in both curative and preventive medicine.
Is Homeopathy A New Therapy?Homeopathy is a well established healing system. Known to the ancient Greeks, the modern system of homeopathy was introduced by a brilliant German physician, Dr. Samuel Hahnemann, in the nineteenth century.Appalled by the barbaric medical practices of his day, he sought a more humane alternative. In his experiments, he took massive doses of Cinchona, a drug used for the treatment of malaria. To his surprise, he found that he developed symptoms similar to malaria. From his observation he developed the basic principle of homeopathy.Today Homeopathy is well accepted as a safe and effective, alternative form of medical treatment.
How Does Homeopathy Work?Homeopathy is a healing process in which the medicines stimulate and encourage the body's natural healing forces of recovery. The homeopathic principle of treating like with like is based on treating an illness with a substance that produces in a healthy person similar symptoms to those experienced by the sick person. Conventional medicine believes that symptoms are caused by the illness, whereas homeopathy sees the symptoms as the body's natural reaction in fighting the illness, and seeks to stimulate them rather than suppress them. For example, Ipecacuanha (from the root of the plant) if taken by a healthy person will cause vomiting, but if taken in tiny homeopathic doses will cure vomiting.Homeopathic medicines contain very, very small quantities of the substances called POTENCIES, prepared in a special way. These high dilutions not only enhance their curative properties, but avoid undesirable side effects.
Is Homeopathy Safe?Homeopathic medicines are completely safe with no unwanted side effects and they are non-addictive. They are safe for babies, children and elderly people.
What Are Homeopathic Medicines Like? There are more than 2,000 homeopathic medicines. They look the same as any other medicines, although they are totally different in their preparation and action. They are usually presented in the form of granules, tablets or liquids, all prepared in modern laboratories in scientific conditions to the highest quality standards. They are prepared from pure, natural animal, vegetable or mineral substances that are listed in the Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia of the United States.Granules and tablets are sweet tasting and they dissolve easily.
How Is A Homeopathic remedy Selected The treatment of a cough in homeopathy will serve as a good example in this regard. In allopathy there are numerous syrups with formulas based on codeine which will quickly relieve a patients's cough. However, there may be toxic effects associated with it, especially on the liver and stomach! In homeopathy there are more than one hundred effective remedies against the cough. Each of these remedies have specific modalities. The homeopathic doctor should take into account all the intrinsic characteristics of the patient and his/her cough. First it will be determined whether the cough is dry or heavy, productive or not, if it is aggravated upon going into open air, by cold, or when the patient returns to a heated room. Once a symptom picture is discovered, the Homeopathic doctor will match the remedy with the symptoms, For example the dry cough of Rumex is triggered by the slightest contact with fresh air. Rumex patients always walk with a scarf covering their nose and mouth. A Pulsatilla patient has a heavy cough during the day and a dry one at night. Natrum Sulfuricum is characterized by a very heavy cough aggravated by humidity. Spongia is the remedy for violent coughs which remind one of the noise a saw makes going through a plank; improved by drinking hot liquid. When organs of elimination such as the kidneys or the liver are insufficient or when a gland or tissue system is deficient, it is possible to stimulate these organs by means of medications when the organic tropism or physological affinities are known. This technique is refereed to as "DRAINAGE". This term expresses the dynamics of this adjunctive therapy which consists of stimulating one or more organs with the elimination function. Some Homeopathic schools are very faithful to this theory of drainage. Others affirm that when the homeopathic remedy is perfectly selected according to the law of similars, it alone performs the function of drainer ad curative agent. In current practice drainage renders a very great service. There are several classifications of drainage remedies. The simplest and most common simply refers to the affinities which certain medications have for this or that organ. Thus, the kidneys are stimulated by Berberis Vulgeris and Solidago Virga; the liver by Chelidonium, Taraxacum and Carduus Marianus; the skin by Fumaria and Saponaria. Other medications are intended to tone the veins, like Aesculus, Hamamelis, Hydrastis; or the mucous glands of the rhinopharynx like Allium Cepa, Ephrasia and Sabadilla. The examples go on and on There is recently another method of drainage using the second decimal potencies of vegetable glycerine macerates prepared either from fresh buds of certain trees or from vegetable tissues in the process of growing and dividing. This is called Gemmotherapy. Examples of drainage by vegetable buds are abundant. Thus, Corylus Avellana (hazel tree) and the young shoots of Rosemarinus (rosemary) stimulate the liver cells. The buds of Ficus Carica (fig tree) normalize the secretion of the gastric juce and are indicated in gastritis. All of these gemmotherapy remedies are currently prescribed by doctors in a first decimal (1DH) glycerine macerate at a dose of fifty to seventy-five drops a day.A second therapeutic method is comparable to drainage; this is Diluted and Energized Organotherapy. Organotherapy or the use of Sarcodes is the therapy which acts on the various glands and tissues of the human body to restore function. It works by the administration of grandular and tissue extracts which act directly upon the malfunctioning gland or tissue by stimulating or draining it. Organo therapy remedies are most often prescribed in the form of sublingual drops. Thus, to stimulate a failing liver or bile vessel, a sarcode of Liver 8X or Bilinum 8X is used. Kidney 8X will increase the diuresis. Mucous of Colon 8X is an excellent constipation remedy.
How Do I Take Homeopathic Medicines? The granules should be allowed to dissolve in the mouth or under the tongue, preferably free from tobacco or flavored substances. Medicines are best taken apart from food or drink. The frequency of the dose and the potency of the medicine may vary according to the type of condition, as recommended by your doctor. The potency of the medicine is denoted by a number which follows its name. For example, Arnica 6x or Cantharis 30x. Dosing should be stopped when the condition is cleared.Proper diet, regular exercise and adequate sleep will, of course, enhance the treatment.

Plant-produced Microbial Vaccines (Current Topics in Microbiology and Immunology)By Alexander V. Karasev
publisher: Springer
Number Of Pages: 120
Publication Date: 2009-06-01
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 354070857X
ISBN-13 / EAN: 9783540708575
Product Description: In recent years, plants have been increasingly explored for production of biomedicines and vaccine components. The two main advantages of plant systems are low cost and a greater potential for scalability as compared to microbial or animal systems. An additional advantage from the public health point of view is high safety compared to animal systems, which is important for vaccine production: there are no known plant pathogens capable of replicating in animals, and in humans in particular. A particular antigen or a protein has to be expressed in a plant using one of many available platforms; this antigen/protein subsequently needs to be purified or processed, and later formulated into a vaccine or a therapeutic; these need to be delivered to a human or animal body via an appropriate route. Naturally, all these vaccines and therapeutics must be subjected to regulatory approvals prior to their use. Thus, the challenge is to adapt plant-based platforms for production of cost-efficient biomedicals that can be approved by FDA for use as vaccine components or therapeutics which will be competitive against existing vaccines and drugs.

????: Study Temple-All kinds of Study Material Bipolar Disorder: A Guide for Patients and FamiliesProduct Description: Bipolar disorder can be devastating. It can disrupt relationships and careers, it can wreak havoc on family life, and, when not properly treated, it can be fatal. Since 1999 this compassionate and comprehensive guide has helped tens of thousands of people cope with this complex disease. This, the second edition of Bipolar Disorder, is thoroughly updated and discusses promising new options for diagnosis and treatment along with new information on the disease's genetic components.Bipolar disorder is difficult to diagnose. Dr. Mondimore explains how symptoms fluctuate in persons with seasonal affective disorder, how they can lead to a mistaken diagnosis of attention deficit--hyperactivity disorder in children, and how they may be made worse by alcohol or drug addiction. The disease can also be difficult to treat. Dr. Mondimore gives advice about how to pick a psychiatrist and cope with the stigma of psychiatric diagnosis. He provides extensive information on treatment options, including the advantages, disadvantages, and side effects of various drug therapies. He also describes what it is like to live with bipolar disorder and discusses how lifestyle changes can improve quality of life. Throughout, he focuses on the importance of building a support system, planning for emergencies, and giving yourself permission to seek help.

Product Description: In order to accurately describe and diagnose psychiatric illness, practitioners require in-depth knowledge of the signs and symptoms of behavioral disorders. Descriptive Psychopathology provides a broad review of the psychopathology of psychiatric illness, beyond the limitations of the DSM and ICD criteria. Beginning with a discussion of the background to psychiatric classification, the authors explore the problems and limitations of current diagnostic systems. The following chapters then present the principles of psychiatric examination and diagnosis, described with accompanying patient vignettes and summary tables, and related to different diagnostic concerns. A thought-provoking conclusion proposes a restructuring of psychiatric classification based on the psychopathology literature and its validating data. Written for psychiatry and neurology residents, as well as clinical psychologists, it is invaluable to anyone who accepts the responsibility for the care of patients with behavioral syndromes.

By Anthony D. Woolf, Kristina AkessonPublisher: Clinical Publishing Number Of Pages: 160 Publication Date: 2008-10-30 ISBN-10 / ASIN: 1904392261 ISBN-13 / EAN: 9781904392262 Product Description: Osteoporosis is a devastating disorder with significant physical and psychosocial consequences. For example, one in three women and one in 12 men over the age of 50 in the UK already suffer from osteoporosis, and every three minutes it is estimated that someone has a fracture due to this disease. "Osteoporosis: An Atlas of Investigation and Management" is a pictorial reference book designed to help doctors understand, prevent and overcome osteoporosis. This practical guide gives advice on how to diagnose and manage patients with this condition and reviews the epidemiology, symptoms, clinical investigations, and the various treatments and interventions. It is a complete visual guide to diagnosis and management of an increasingly prevalent chronic disorder. It is suitable for doctors in both primary and secondary care.????: Study Temple-All kinds of Study Material Osteoporosis: An Atlas Of Investigation And Diagnosis
